www.ruthinschool.co.uk | #StudyThriveSucceedTelephone: +44 (0)1824 702543 Summer Course 2022 Aims: The Summer School is a tremendous opportunity for students to enjoy a specially tailored course that will meet their academic, social and cultural needs in preparation for study in the UK. Our aim is for students to develop their English skills, gain skills required for various subjects and cover subject specific material which will enable them to commence GCSE or AS Level courses at an appropriate level. The Course: The course is delivered in a safe environment by experienced professionals who have the welfare and progress of students as their foremost concern. Additionally, British local students from Forms 4, 5 and L6 join classes and excursions throughout the summer to help induct and assist; many long-lasting friendships are formed as a result of this involvement. There are several teaching groups based on age and academic ability with all students studying the same number of subject specific lessons. The material will be targeted at the appropriate level in order that students are afforded the very best opportunities to improve. Students will also follow a programme designed to enrich their understanding of the British way of life which will include such aspects as etiquette, customs and manners. We also place importance on building students’ confidence in their own abilities alongside promoting self-worth through many and varied enrichment activities. These activities further enable us to enhance students’ cultural understanding thereby promoting international harmony. Paramount to our approach is that the course is accessible and enjoyable, enabling students to make the very best out of the opportunities that they are given, alongside a wider appreciation of how all aspects of life, when approached in a positive manner, can be of benefit. www.ruthinschool.co.uk | #StudyThriveSucceedTelephone: +44 (0)1824 702543 Curriculum Overview: The intention is for students to develop their English skills, cover subject specific material which will enable them to commence GCSE or AS level courses at an appropriate level and, most importantly, gain the skills required in some subjects. Students will have 28 periods of academic lessons per week. In total, 20 periods are given to English Language and one hour twenty each week (2 periods per subject) is given to Economics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics with Geography offering a two-day practical experience. Students will also follow a programme which covers the British way of life. In addition to etiquette, manners and culture (as referred to above) this programme seeks to ensure that students are safe in the UK and so covers such aspects as road safety, security of personal possessions and online safety. This makes up 4 hours of teaching per week. Additionally, students will participate in 6 hours of varied sporting activities per week including such sports as archery and basketball for example. Students are afforded time for personal administration and prep each week. Social Programme: We further offer an organised social programme which is developed to help students improve their spoken English outside the classroom. This programme runs each evening after dinner (7.30pm onwards), takes place both on and off site and changes on a weekly basis. The social programme takes full advantage of events in both the local and wider area. www.ruthinschool.co.uk | #StudyThriveSucceedTelephone: +44 (0)1824 702543 Excursions: Cultural excursions are an integral part of the Summer Course and they take the format of three weekend trips and a number of day trips (Chester, Liverpool, Manchester).
